All Day Long

“My mouth is filled with Your praise, declaring Your splendor all day long.”
The words “all day long” stood out to me as I read Psalm 71, highlighting and circling in neon markers and doodling all over the page of my Bible. Each word in verse eight grabbed my attention. There was something about the simplicity that drew me in for a closer look.
At times I miss the way we would dissect poetry in Literature class all those years ago, and the vibrant discussion that followed. I like to sift through God‘s Word in a way similar to those days in class. As I study the Bible, I often speak scripture aloud. That is one sure way I can fill my mouth with His praise.
First thing in the morning I try to begin the day with out-loud adoration. It starts with something like, “Jesus, I love You. You’re awesome. Thank You, Father.” Right then, my flesh takes a backseat to my spirit. My mind will have to get in line with the praise coming out of my mouth. Pretty soon after my first few steps, I am more inclined to dive into the Word of God than I would be if I had not started my morning this way.
When I respond with my own mouth, I receive a personal, holy benefit. I take responsibility over only what I can control. As my words articulate the praise of God, my mind takes notice. Mental awareness of who God is directs my emotions, and even increases my energy. This is something I am learning to do more and more.
Many summers ago when my boys were young, they attended camp in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Both of them had the opportunity to participate in a tradition-honored competition. Each boy was required to build and maintain a campfire overnight. They gathered their own wood and learned how to keep it burning till sunrise. They would dote and hover over the flames to insure the fire stayed alive, lest they become disqualified from the competition.
Our relationship with Christ is somewhat like building our own campfire that we maintain until the rising of the Son. No one can build that relationship, or keep that fire going, on our behalf. The decision to seek the Lord in prayer, saturate ourselves in the Word, and worship Him from our heart is ours to choose. He takes what we give Him and multiplies it.
As we choose Christ daily, we are becoming more aware of who He is and our desire to worship Him increases. We hunger for more of His Word and yearn for the work of His Spirit in and through us. We are learning how to make room for Him in our own lives and also how to encourage others to do the same. As we purpose to fill our mouths with His praise, we will declare His splendor all day long.
Declaration
Today I determine to share, sing, proclaim and display the praise of the Lord. In my rising, walking, sitting, and lying down, my mouth will be full of words to celebrate Jesus. All day long I choose to remind myself that Jesus is the Lord of every part of my life. I will declare His splendor to all the world!
