What is God Like?

It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.
— Proverbs 25:2

What is God like? He loves to love and be loved. The Bible says God is patient and slow to anger. Matthew 6:8 says that he knows what we need before we even ask him, and still likes to hear us ask. He is both tender and stern. He is a good Father. He is altogether lovely, and none compare with him. He is more humble than we'll ever be. He is encouragement personified, speaking the exact words we need to hear at the exact moment we need them. He doesn’t just do good, he is goodness itself (Matthew 19:17).

He is the God who makes the impossible possible and laughs while doing it. He loves quality time. It means the world to him. When you’re with him you don’t have to say much, because his company is all you need. He is a gentleman and holds open the door of his heart so that we can walk right through. He loves to reveal himself to us. He is the solution to every situation. He is life itself, and our daily bread (John 6:35). He sits patiently outside the door of our heart, waiting for us to open. He is gentle and humble in heart (Matthew 11:29). He requires us to search for him with all of our hearts because he loves the chase (Jeremiah 29:13). He won’t settle for second place in life, because he is life itself. He longs for us to know him, like really know him. He doesn’t want to be admired from a distance. He wants us to hear his heartbeat (John 13:25). He did not spare anything to show his love for us, and he longs for us to do the same for him.

He is more than a building, he’s more than a devotional, he’s more than a prayer, he’s more than a study, he desires to be our first love. He loves to be in our thoughts, and it moves him. He loves when we are generous because we can never out-give him. He loves when we worship him, and simply when we talk about him. He loves when we hear him, and even more when we obey him. He loves it when we trust him. He loves individually, and not just corporately. He still leaves the ninety-nine for the one.

He looks to the earth, inspecting the hearts of men, eagerly searching for desperation (Psalm 53:2). He hangs around the lowly, still dines with sinners, and loves spending time with the needy. He has a heart for the poor and loves when we go out of our way for them. He loves the helpless, and prefers to be with them (Matthew 9:36). He loves when we do things in secret because only he will know (Matthew 6:4).

He loves a burning heart. He loves it when we are tender. He loves it when we are still. He loves a searching heart looking for him. He loves when we are merciful, just like him. He values honesty, and it hurts him when we try to hide from him (Genesis 3:9). He loves when we are like children, and when we ask him questions. He loves when we put others first, and when we forsake our reputation for his. He loves to heal, both hearts, minds, and bodies. He loves when we read his word and loves when we watch him perform it (Jeremiah 1:12).

When we are weak, he is strong (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we are hopeless, he is our Hope. When we are faithless, he remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). Yes, his heart still gets grieved (John 13:21). He knows what’s best for us, and loves to teach it to us. He sees and thinks differently than us, and loves when we acknowledge it (Isaiah 55:8-9). He loves to create, and he is a masterful artist (Psalm 19:1). More than our hands, he’s after our hearts. He is life’s greatest prize and our greatest reward (Genesis 15:1). He is worth the sacrifice, and he is worth the cost. He is worth the surrender.

This God, nothing compares to him.

No one compares to Jesus.

There is no one like him.

Nothing compares to his Presence.

Nothing compares to knowing him.
