Faith That Walks on Water

“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”
The disciples were already overwhelmed before Jesus ever appeared on the water. The wind was against them. Waves crashed around them. Darkness surrounded them. Then suddenly, in the middle of the storm, they saw Jesus walking on the sea.
Peter did something most people never would have considered. He stepped out of the boat.
What’s incredible is that Peter actually walked on water. For a moment, he did the impossible—not because of his own power, strength, or confidence, but because his eyes were fixed on Jesus. The impossible became possible through the power of Christ.
But then fear entered the picture.
Scripture says, “when he saw the wind, he was afraid.” The storm that had always been there suddenly became bigger in Peter’s mind than the Savior standing before him. Fear shifted his focus, and when fear took over, he began to sink.
How often does that happen in our own lives?
God calls us to step out in faith, but somewhere between the calling and the miracle, fear creeps in. Fear of failure. Fear of uncertainty. Fear of what others think. Fear can paralyze us, distract us, and ultimately cause us to sink beneath the very thing God was empowering us to overcome.
Yet even in Peter’s sinking, there is grace. The moment Peter cried out, Jesus reached down and lifted him up.
Jesus did not call Peter to small faith. He called him out of the boat into something supernatural. God still honors BIG faith today. Faith that believes mountains can move. Faith that believes broken lives can be restored. Faith that believes God can provide, heal, open doors, and do what seems impossible.
The safest place was not actually the boat. The safest place was wherever Jesus was.
Maybe today God is calling you to step out of the comfort of the boat. To trust Him beyond what makes sense. To believe bigger. To stop focusing on the wind and start focusing on the One who walks above the storm.
Fear sinks us. Faith carries us.
Reflection
What “boat” of comfort or safety am I afraid to step out of?
Have I allowed fear to become louder than God’s voice?
What would BIG faith look like in my life right now?
Prayer
Lord, help me keep my eyes fixed on You instead of the storms around me. Remove the fear that causes me to doubt and sink. Give me bold faith to step out when You call me, even when it seems impossible. Remind me that through Your power, I can walk through storms that would otherwise overwhelm me. Strengthen my faith to trust You fully and believe for greater things. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
