The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
— Galatians 5:1

Every American knows those words.  They echo through our national consciousness.  They stir inside us emotions that we don't always talk about at parties.  They remind us of the sacrifices of people we don't know and will never meet.  They bring to mind men and women whose names we know and stories we understand, even if we don’t know them as friends - names like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

These names call to mind the ideals of America.  The understanding that all men are created equal.  These words hold the dream of little boys and girls playing together as God intended.  They present images of smoke rising from battle fields, even when the men and women on those fields do not.  They remind us of something that is more than a feeling.  It is more than an idea.  It is the very fabric and reality that is the dream of America - to live as free people and stand bravely in homes surrounded by people we love.

I think about those words, those people and their stories as we prepare as a country to celebrate 250 years of a grand experiment.  An experiment to see if human beings could handle the weight and responsibility of being free.

And as I think about those words and ideals and our great country, I cannot help but think about another home that holds not just the brave, but the timid.  The weak.  The drunk.  The lonely.  The ones who feel like they are falling apart while being so held together it surpasses all understanding.  I think about a home so compelling that motivated a Man to go to a cross to pay for things He never did.  A land that calls to all of us through the bravery of this Man.  A home that has been promised to be prepared for us by this same Man.

I think of a land where true freedom exists in the complete surrender of every right I think I have.  I think of a freedom that is given even when I know punishment is what I deserve.

I cling to the hope of this home, not just an idea, but as the very essence of everything that I know to be true and real.  I hold fast to this freedom and this home not because I was told about it at church or read about it in a book.  But because as a scared, lonely, depressed 26 year old, I asked this Man to enter into my heart.  I told this Man I had heard about Him my entire life, but I did not know Him personally. I really wanted to meet Him and whatever that looked like I was willing to do it.  I think about how that very moment my entire life changed.  My life was transformed into what it was always created to be.

So, if you ask me why I believe in America and why those closing words to our National Anthem echo so loudly in my heart, I can honestly tell you it is not because I took Political Science at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide).  And it is not because I have watched Saving Private Ryan. Or because I heard a great speech about freedom.  No, I get emotional when I hear those words because I have experienced it.

The same is true for the reason why I believe so deeply in the perfect saving grace of this Man, Jesus Christ.  I feel that I can be brave not because I read the words of the Lord in Joshua telling me to be “strong and courageous” and that He would “never leave nor forsake me.” No, I believe I can be brave because I have experienced bravery that I did not possess rise up in me when I needed it most.  And I don’t simply believe that I can live free with all my sins forgiven just because I read that God has “removed my sins as far as the east is from the west” or that “those whom the Son sets free are free indeed.”

I believe I am a free child of God because in the depth of my sin I have felt purity wash over me like a warm bath.  I have risen from the ashes of my own depravity to walk in purity like I never knew was possible.

In closing, our prayer is that you would not just listen to a song about America on this Fourth of July, but you would truly experience the reality of the freedom we have been given.  And even more than that, our prayer is that you experience the life changing power of Jesus Christ. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is available to each of us.  He offers this to us freely and only through Him can we truly say that we live in a land of the free and a home of the brave.

Prayer

God, we thank you for the blessing of America.  We acknowledge that You divinely ordained this land and have held us together these 250 years.  We ask that You give wisdom to our leaders, protection to our military and others working to keep us safe.  And we ask You to enter into our hearts in a new and fresh way.  We ask that You pour out Your Spirit in new measure upon this great country and on each of us.  That we may know You alone as Savior and walk with You in deep intimacy each day. In Jesus name. Amen.
