Day 2 Fast: The Great Rescue

I once read that, you cannot get white flour out of a coal sack, nor perfection out of human nature; therefore, he who looks for human perfection might as well look for sugar in the sea. The Apostle Paul aptly described the fierce dichotomy between our righteous intentions and flawed actions in Romans 7:15-25: “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. I love God’s word with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?

Paul gives the solution in verse 25: “The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.Luke 3 and 4 show us that the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert to fast and pray for 40 days. During that fast, Satan came to tempt/entice Jesus into sin. Jesus was able to overcome every temptation. That’s why He is able to provide the perfect rescue plan for every dilemma we face. As we emulate His example of fasting, prayer, and relying on God’s Word and God’s Spirit, we too will emerge victorious over Satan, temptation, and every misdeed of the body. This is overcoming life.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I repent of the weakness of my flesh and my carnal desires. Please help me overcome each struggle I face. As I fast and pray today, I declare that your Holy Spirit is putting to death the misdeeds of my body and releasing life and freedom to me (Romans 8:13). Thank you Lord for doing this work in me. Amen.
