Day 40: Don’t Drift Away
Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was a prominent American lawyer, who argued over 200 cases before the United States Supreme Court in his career. He served as a U.S. Representative and Senator for New Hampshire and Massachusetts; and held the position of Secretary of State under three presidents. Webster said:
If religious books are not widely circulated among the masses in this country, I don’t know what is going to become of us as a nation. If truth, be not diffused, error will be; if God and his word are not known and received, the devil, and his works will gain the ascendancy ; if the evangelical volume does not reach every hamlet, the pages of a corrupt and licentious literature will; if the power of the gospel is not felt throughout the length and breadth of the land, anarchy and misrule, degradation and misery, corruption, and darkness, will reign without mitigation on end. (Ernest Reisinger, “Every Christian a Publisher,” Free Grace Broadcaster, Issue 51., Winter, 1995, p. 17).
We have learned during our 40 days fast that if today’s Christian men and women respond to the Biblical discipline of fasting with apathy and lethargy, the Church of Jesus Christ will remain languid and anemic at best, or powerless and irrelevant at worst.
No matter where you live, your nation needs the Gospel and its saving-healing-delivering power now more than ever. Maybe you or your family are also in need of that power too. In these past 40 days of fasting and prayer, we have vanquished our apathy and lethargy and literally reached out to the Lord together. Knowing that the Lord is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him, we now encourage you to take heart and believe that He will more than reciprocate the love and sacrificial devotion you have shown Him. Whether you saw/felt it or not, during this 40 day fast, the Lord has been receiving your prayers and working in your life in a tremendous way- greater than you could possibly imagine! Your labor for the Lord will never be in vain. Derek Prince sums it up this way: “There is no way to measure the tremendous power released by prayer and fasting when practiced with the right motives and in accordance with the principles of scripture.”
Going forward, we want to encourage you to make prayer and fasting a regular and cherished discipline in your walk with Jesus. Resolve to move forward with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit and never drift away from the truths that we have learned together from His Word.
It has been an absolute honor and privilege to share this 40-day journey of corporate fasting and prayer with you. We love and appreciate you. Thank you for your faithfulness. God bless you and your family. You are in our love and prayers.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the grace, courage, and strength to fast and pray these last 40 days. There’s nothing greater than the love you show us daily through your Son Jesus Christ. Thank you for dwelling in our heart by the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ. Lord, we completely yield and surrender to your Holy Spirit. We ask that the Holy Spirit would continue to work out the fruit of salvation in our lives. May our lives bear much fruit and bring you glory. Thank you for breakthrough and victory over the enemy. Lord, we worship you and glorify you, now and always! In Jesus name we pray all this. Amen.
