Day 22: Eggs Are Eggs, But Some Are Rotten
Robert J. Morgan tells the story of an American pastor by the name of Elisha A. Hoffman, who lived in the 1800s. One day, he met a woman who was severely depressed. She confessed to him that her condition was beyond cure. Wringing her hands in fear, she asked, “What shall I do? Oh, what shall I do to be free?” Hoffman replied, “You cannot do better than to take all your sorrows to Jesus. You must tell Jesus.” Suddenly the lady’s face lit up. “Yes!” she cried, “That’s it! I must tell Jesus.” Her words echoed in Hoffman’s ears, and he mulled them over as he returned home. He drew out his pen and started writing, I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! / I cannot bear my burdens alone; / I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! / Jesus can help me, Jesus alone. Hoffman lived to be 90, talking to Jesus about his burdens and giving the church such wonderful hymns like “What A Wonderful Savior”, “Down at the Cross”, “Are You Washed in the Blood?”, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”, and a thousand more.
Eggs are eggs but some are rotten, and so are life circumstances- some are good but every now and then, life hands you some rotten eggs. No wonder the Bible contains many scriptures of God’s comfort in the face of pain and loss. There are times when fasting and prayer will bring miracles and breakthroughs, but there are times when the very things we are praying against actually come to pass. In such moments, should we look at it like our fasting and prayers failed? Of course not! Fasting with prayer is always a win-win situation. It always brings us closer to the Lord and His comfort as we tell Jesus about our challenges.
Charles Spurgeon put it best when he said, “In seasons of severe trial, the Christian has nothing on earth that he can trust to, and is therefore compelled to cast himself on his God alone. When his vessel is on its beam-ends, and no human deliverance can avail, he must simply and entirely trust himself to the providence and care of God. Happy storm that wrecks a man on such a rock as this! O blessed hurricane that drives the soul to God and God alone! There is no getting at our God sometimes because of the multitude of our friends; but when a man is so poor, so friendless, so helpless that he has nowhere else to turn, he flies into his Father’s arms, and is blessedly clasped therein! When he is burdened with troubles so pressing and so peculiar, that he cannot tell them to any but his God, he may be thankful for them; for he will learn more of his Lord then than at any other time.”
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, you are our hope for salvation and deliverance. You are the God of all comfort. You promise that your mercy and justice are coming soon. By your strong arm, you will vanquish every foe and wipe away every tear. Lord, today we wait in hope for your powerful arm. We love and trust you with our very lives. As we continue in fasting and prayer, please release the joy and comfort of your presence. Your love is all we need. We rest in your finished work on the Cross. Thank you for shedding your Blood for us. Amen.
