Day 27: Bonjour! Here is Your Bread and Meat
There are few men in the Bible like Elijah! Really! The first time his name is mentioned in the Bible, we see him boldly confronting a wicked king (Ahab) and foreclosing on the rain and the dew for a few years! (I Kings 17:1). Then God takes him on a series of adventures where he dines by a beautiful brook with feathered chefs attending him daily with: “Bonjour Monsieur, voici votre pain et votre viande!” Ravens brought Elijah bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook (1 Kings 17:6). When the brook dried up, Elijah found a widow to take him in. If you are thinking it was mercenary or sexual, you need to repent and read your Bible aright. After that, Elijah confronted Israel’s idolatry in a mighty showdown on Mt. Carmel where he called down fire from heaven, and an apostate nation was delivered. Elijah then called down showers of rain and broke the Olympic record by running faster than Ahab’s chariot for miles. But not everyone was mesmerized by Elijah’s feats. Ahab’s wicked wife Jezebel set out to kill Elijah.
Frightened and discouraged by Jezebel’s demonic threats, Elijah walked in the wilderness depressed and wishing for death. (Do you think that Pastors and Christian leaders don’t get attacked or discouraged? Think again!) What was God’s solution to this warfare? Food and sleep. Never underestimate the power of a snack and a nap. God sent an angel to Elijah with food and instructions. Elijah ate two meals, and then fasted for forty days and nights as he walked to Mt. Sinai to meet with God. Oh boy, did Elijah have a mighty encounter with God after his 40 day fast! (1 Kings 19) Do you want to overcome anxiety, discouragement, and the fear of man? Pray, fast and seek God. You will have an encounter with God that will totally strengthen, heal, renew, and refresh you. We don’t recommend fasting for 40 days without food unless God sends you an angel with heavenly food.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, the Bible says Elijah was a man just like me. The great thing that set him apart was that he prayed, spoke the word of God and acted on it by faith. Please help me to emulate him. Give me the grace to seek you in prayer and fasting for the glory of your name. Amen.
