Day 19: Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5 tells us the fruit of the Spirit is the evidence of walking with Him. Fasting aligns us with the Spirit by denying the desires of the flesh and tuning into the voice of the Spirit.

In Matthew 7:18-20, Jesus says,  “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.” Jesus says we will recognize people by their fruits. In this fast, God is pruning your heart and growing His fruits in you.

As your body hungers, your spirit depends on Him. As you say no to comfort, the Spirit is growing your patience. As you press past irritability and distraction, He is forming gentleness and self-control. As you pray for others instead of focusing on your own lack, He is developing kindness and love.

Fruit doesn’t grow overnight, but fasting puts you in the posture to receive the transformation.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, cultivate the fruits of your Spirit in my life. As I hunger and deny myself, may the fruit of _____ [love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control] grow in my life. I cannot do this without you. I love you. I surrender my life to you today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
